Ceremonies

Namings - Welcomings

It is traditional to welcome a new baby with a ceremony. Where as baptism or christenings bless children and welcome them into the church, naming ceremonies lovingly celebrate and welcome a child into its community of family and friends, leaving them free to choose their own religion or belief system when they are more mature.
The ceremony can include religious and or spiritual content reflecting the family values. A naming ceremony recognises the childs inclusion in and contribution to its family and "tribe"or spiritual family. The ceremony announces the child's name and reason for that name being chosen as well as the parent's promises and commitment to the child.

If Godparents have been chosen to participate in the child's life their role is acknowledged and their pledges to their Godchild's future made known.

There are no age limits. Children can be named shortly after birth but are sometimes older and included with another child in the family. It is also a way to welcome an adopted or step-child in the blending of 2 families. Adults can also choose to have a naming ceremony, when changing their name or celebrating a rite of passage.
